While tidying up I found a report about Slimgb: Groebner bases with Slim Polynomials by Brickenstein.
After a ver quick glance, the idea seems to be to use coeff size to help choose the order in which to process pairs.
It is report 35 (as PostScript) from a series hosted in Kaiserslautern:https://www.singular.uni-kl.de/zca/Reports_on_ca/index.html
We should look at this. If it is not too hard, it might be a student project.
