Some Travel Suggestions

By Air:
Gatwick Airport is the airport closest to the Castle. If you arrive at Heathrow, take the Shuttle Bus from there to Gatwick. That should take about 1.5 to 1.75 hours (possibly more on Mondays and Fridays because of traffic). There are two shuttle services between the airports: Speedlink (executive travel) which cost 15 pounds each way; and JetLink which costs 10 pounds each way with a 15 pound charge if you buy a roundtrip ticket. We urge you NOT to take a London Cab from Heathrow, unless you are eager to spend a fortune!

At Gatwick Airport take the Eastbourne/Hastings train, alighting at POLEGATE, the station after Lewes. This trip should take about 1 hour and costs roughly 7.5 pounds for a single ticket.

At Polegate it is generally possible to take a taxi to the Castle, a journey of approximately 15 minutes, at a cost of about 9 pounds.

We can try and arrange private cars to ferry people from Gatwick on Monday and back to Gatwick on Saturday, if there is sufficient interest. A car will cost about 30 pounds each way, which can be divided among up to 4 people per car. Our idea is to have a car (or cars) leave Gatwick for the Castle at 1 pm on Monday with reserved places for those requesting the service. There may be an 8 seater available and if there is we will let you know. The costs should go down a bit in that case.

If your plane arrives in time for such a car and you are interested, please let us know. We'll need the following information:
(we can also try for cars at 5 pm if there is interest).

The cars, on Saturday morning, would leave the Castle at about 9 am and would normally take about an hour, subject to traffic, to arrive at Gatwick.

We could try for a similar arrangement from Heathrow, again depending on interest. The cost would be 40 pounds (each way) for this longer ride which would take about 2 hours (again subject to traffic).


By Train:
(From London): From Victoria Station take the Eastbourne/Hastings train via Gatwick Airport (then see directions above to Polegate Station). This train journey should take about 1 hour and 20 minutes. These are hourly trains from Victoria Station which cost about 15 pounds.

From Charing Cross Station one should take the St. Leonards/Hastings train, alighting at BATTLE station (the station after Robertsbridge). This journey should take about 1 hour and 15 minutes. There are trains at half hour intervals and the cost is approximately 14 pounds.

Battle is also a 15 minute taxi ride from the Castle. The cost of a cab should be about 10 pounds.


By Car:
From the North: The easiest route, although possibly not the least congested, is the M25 going south via GATWICK AIRPORT.

Stay with the signs to Gatwick, although change morotways to the M23 AFTER the Reigate turnoff (which should be ignored). Follow the signs to Gatwick.

On the M23 take the next exit AFTER the Gatwick turnoff, which is the A264 to East Grinstead, and at Felbridge (2 miles NW of East Grinstead) join the A22 to Eastbourne.

Stay on the A22 for about 20 miles, through Horsted Keynes and Goldne Cross, etc. until, at Boship Farm roundabout (Travelodge on the left, Boship Farm Hotel on the right), take the A271 through Horsebridge. The roundabout is where the A22, A271 and A267 converge.

About 4 miles along the A271 there is the village of Herstmonceux. Continue on the A271 for a couple of miles and after passing the Windmill Hill Tennis Centre, take the right turn to Wartling and Pevensey. The East gate to the Castle is on the right, two miles down the road.

There is a barrrier at the gate, but to enter push the button and Reception will raise the bar. Drive down past the Castle (on your right) and follow the drive round to the right at the triangle of grass. There are a few cottages on the right, and a car park on the left. Walk over the flagstones and enter the Castle through the West Door. Reception is on the right.

From Dover or the Chunnel: It takes about 1.5 to 2 hours to travel to the Castle from Dover or the Chunnel. From the Channel Tunnel at Folkestone, take the A259 towards Eastbourne. Just before you reach Pevensey (the village closest to the Castle from the East) there is a large roundabout with an Esso petrol Station on it. Take the fourth exit on the roundabout, marked Wartling. The Castle is approximately 5 minutes down that road.

For those coming from Dover, one needs to take the A20 from Dover to Folkestone and then the A259 as in the directions from the Chunnel.


As you will note, these directions come with the help of the staff at the Castle and they will be happy to answer any particular questions you might have. We will try to get back to people in early May with information about the cars, so please let us know as soon as possible what your preferences are there.
