MEGA 2009
We are pleased to announce that the sixth International School on Computer Algebra: COCOA 2009 will take place in June 8-12 2009 at Facultat de Matemàtiques i Estadística de la Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya in Barcelona (Spain).

The main sponsor of the school is Shell International Exploration and Production (SIEP), Rijswijk (NLD).

The school will be held the week before the COCOA Conference (12-13 June) in honour of Prof. Lorenzo Robbiano's 65th Birthday, and the conference MEGA09 (15-19 June), both in Barcelona.

Following the very successful format we have used for the previous schools, there will be two intensive courses with CoCoA tutorials:

Course 1 Marilina Rossi On Castelnuovo Regularity and related problems tutor: Anna M. Bigatti and Eduardo Sáenz de Cabezón
Course 2 Anthony V. Geramita Secant Varieties tutor: Enrico Carlini
The tutors and assistants will be able to provide help for participants in the use of the computer algebra system CoCoA. Students who own laptops are encouraged to bring them for use during the tutorials. The CoCoA system is available for installation by downloading it from the CoCoA web page.

There is space in the school for about 20 participants, who should currently be enrolled in a doctoral programme somewhere in the world or be recent postdoctoral fellows. All students who are accepted for admission to the School will receive a scholarship which will cover some of the expenses for bed&breakfast in Barcelona. Those wishing to participate in the School should submit a letter of application to either:

Lorenzo Robbiano robbiano@dima.unige.it
Anthony Geramita geramita@dima.unige.it or tony@mast.queensu.ca

The Letter of Application should include the applicant's CV as well as the applicant's reasons for wanting to take part in the school. There should also be included the (email) address of one mathematician who can act as referee for the application.

Applications should be submitted by 21st MARCH, 2009 and the final decisions about scholarships will be made before the end of March by the Organizing Committee (A. Bigatti, A. Geramita, L. Robbiano). Information about costs, accommodations, method of payment, etc. will come in the next announcement.

The local organizers are Gemma Colomé-Nin and Montserrat Manubens. To contact them use the address cocoa09 at imub.ub.es.
